A real say in planning the services they receive...
Mencap Cymru's Partners in Politics project is all about giving young people with a learning disability the chance to get their voice heard. The project delivers citizenship training sessions to young people in schools, colleges and youth groups across Wales.
The training session explains how politics works in Wales and more importantly how we can change things that we are not happy with. The project also organises question and answer sessions with politicians and has helped young people to get their ideas on the political agenda through the National Assembly for Wales petition system.
Partners in Politics, which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund, also challenges perceptions about learning disability. All four training officers in the Partners in Politics team have a learning disability. The message is clear for students, teachers and politicians; we all have something to contribute but we just need to be given a chance.
