Circus Eruption is an Integrated Youth Circus Project based in Swansea, working with a core group of 50-60 young people. As an integrated group at least 1/3 of this group are seen as having a physical or learning disability.

Inclusion is a key element of our work, and we ensure that everyone who joins is able to take part, learn and most importantly have fun. We have found circus skills to be an ideal way of working with young people as it levels the playing field and puts everyone on an equal footing irrespective of abilities. All of our games and activities ensure that everyone can take part, and we adapt our circus skills to focus on people's individual abilities, and not on their disabilities. Through doing this we increase the confidence and self-esteem of everyone in the group.

Participation is another focus of Circus Eruption and the young people play an active role in the running of the project through regular consultations. We run a Young Representatives scheme, where young people are elected by their peers to represent the views of the group in meetings with the Project Coordinator. Circus Eruption also put on at least 2 shows each year, and the young people develop the themes and story, design their own costumes and props, and make their own routines.

The young participants who are disadvantaged benefit from the social inclusion and equality element of our work, and everyone benefits from experiencing social interaction with people of different abilities and backgrounds. Overall we promote an atmosphere that encourages respect and tolerance for all.

The project was founded in 1991, and since then we have taught our skills, but also passed on our values of respect and tolerance to thousands of young people and developed dozens of young people led shows.
